WPM Tracker Alpha Download

Your typing speed, live.

A small counter in the corner of your screen shows your words per minute while you work, in every app. Counted the way typing tests count.

Untitled

Click the document and type. The counter switches from the sample typist to you.

Compact or detailed

Compact is a small capsule: the number, the values right next to it, and a graph at the end. Detailed names every value and gives the graph a row of its own. Pick the size, which numbers you see and whether you want the graph, then put it in any corner of any screen.

Always in the corner, never in the way

The counter floats above every app and every desktop, full screen included. Clicks go straight through it, and it fades out while your pointer is over it, so you can always see what's underneath.

Point at the counter to see it step aside.

The color tells you how it's going

WPM Tracker compares your speed with your own average over the last 7 days. Blue when you're slower, mint around your average, amber and pink when you're faster. You know how it's going without reading the number.

It catches fire when you're flying

Type faster than your own 7-day average and the counter plays along. Ten words in at 10% above it, you're on a roll, with sparks off every word and a count of the run. Twenty-five words at 25% above, and it's on fire.

It only ever measures you against your own normal, so a 45 wpm typist catches fire as often as a 120 wpm one. A pause ends the run, and there's no streak to lose. One switch turns it all off.

Press a key to play one. Or try it yourself at the top: type slowly for a line, then speed up without stopping.

The numbers typing tests use

wpm
The characters you kept, five to a word, per minute of typing.
raw
Every character you typed, the deleted ones too.
burst
The speed of your last word, from the space before it to the space after it.
avg
Your wpm over the last 7 days.
acc
How much of what you typed you kept.

Point at a number to find it in the counter.

Your history, one click away

Click the number in the menu bar to see your speed over the last few minutes, hours and days, with how long you typed and how many words.

The menu bar panel: a preview of the counter, the try-it tape, and a table of speed, typing time and words from the last 5 minutes to all time

Share your speed with others

Every row of your history has a share key. It turns that stretch of typing into a card with its numbers and graph, in square, portrait or wide. Copy it and paste it anywhere.

The price picks up speed

WPM Tracker is free to use. Pro is a single payment, and each batch costs more than the one before, so the earlier you are, the less you pay.

Questions

Is WPM Tracker a keylogger?

No. A keylogger records what you type so someone else can read it. WPM Tracker never stores your text. It keeps only the information it needs to work, and all of it stays on your own computer.

Does thinking lower my speed?

Outside a typing test there's no start button, so one rule decides what counts: a key press counts together with the time since the one before it, but only when that gap is under a second. Reading, thinking and coffee breaks never count against you. Fixing a typo does count, just like in a test.

Keycaps for the words quick and brown: gaps under a second count as typing time, a 1.8 second pause is left out, and fixing a typo with backspace counts
Why does it need Input Monitoring?

To notice that a key was pressed while you type in another app. macOS asks you once, and you can turn it off in System Settings whenever you like.

Does it work in every app?

Yes, everywhere you type. The only exception is password fields, which macOS hides from every app.

Does dictation count?

No. Dictated text arrives without key presses, so only your typing counts.

Do I need an account, or the internet?

No. WPM Tracker works on your computer alone, with no account. If a feature ever needs a server of ours, it may be priced on its own.

When can I get it?

Now, on macOS 13 or later: download it here. It's in alpha, so expect rough edges. Windows and Linux come next.
